Please Note: Course DescriptionAssessing and Addressing Organizational and Systemic Contributors to ConflictThis two-day specialized course will give participants the tools to identify, evaluate, and address organizational and systemic contributors to conflict. The course explores the nature and sources of systemic and organizational conflict, and provides participants with the opportunity to develop practical skills to address systemic issues to prevent escalation, encourage the organization to respond to harms, and to manage inevitable conflicts which arise. Topics include the role of the ombuds in addressing systemic conflict, assessment—exploring the root causes and building support for actions, honing skills for raising difficult issues within an organization, framing and delivering feedback, and practice principles for systems work. The course is interactive and uses a range of modalities including case studies, self-reflection, group discussion, and skills practice. This training will be co-taught by Aimee Gourlay, JD, Executive Director of the Mediation Center in Minneapolis-Saint Paul and Jessica Kuchta-Miller, MA, JD, CO-OP, Ombudsperson at Washington University in St. Louis. Course Limit: 20 participants Prerequisites: Foundations of Organizational Ombudsman Practice This course is approved for 13 Professional Development Hours towards the CO-OP® Credential.

Aimee is CEO of Mediation Center, an affiliate of Mitchell Hamline Law School's Dispute Resolution Institute, for whom she is also a Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor. She serves on the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution National Roster of Environmental Dispute Resolution and Consensus Building Professionals, on the senior facilitator and mediator panels of the State of MN Department of Administration Master Contract Program, and she served on the EEOC panel of mediators. Her mediation work is focused on pre-litigation issues, working with individuals and teams to resolve problems before they escalate and to improve the quality of the workplace. Her other consulting work includes assessments and process design for: land use; watershed management; nonprofit organizations; systemic racial discrimination claims; allocation of public resources; legislative policy-making dialogue; environmental permitting; and, work with teams within state and local government.
