2022 Ombuds Day Announcement

By Ryan Smith, Ed.D., Assistant University Ombudsperson, Office of the University Ombudsperson, Michigan State University

Dear Colleagues,

Mark your calendars! October 13, 2022 is Ombuds Day. As the Chair of this year’s American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution Ombuds Day Planning Committee, I am pleased to share with you this year’s theme: Ombuds: Resilience, Respect, Resolve.

Ombuds Day was first celebrated in 2018 and has continued to be recognized every year on the second Thursday in October. The celebration of Ombuds Day transcends sector and political boundaries, highlighting the important work ombuds do in various ways and across the globe.

The Goals of Ombuds Day include:

  • Educating the public about the ombuds role
  • Encouraging greater use of ombuds programs
  • Connecting ombuds in their communities
  • Uniting the ombuds profession

What can you do to celebrate Ombuds Day? Learn more and find resources on the IOA website and at OmbudsDay.com. Are you on Twitter? I encourage you to follow @OmbudsDay and tag this Twitter handle in your own Ombuds Day activities. Additionally, if you are looking for ways to celebrate Ombuds Day, I have listed a few ideas:

  • Host a virtual or in-person speaker, panel, or webinar.
  • Host a reception for your organization.
  • Set up a table to talk about your work.
  • Create a commemorative video or letter from an organizational or sector leader.
  • Help us to request a governmental or organizational proclamation. Examples can be found here: https://abaombudsday.wordpress.com/proclamations/.
  • Engage in an email or social media campaign around Ombuds Day.
  • Attend an Ombuds Day Event. As we get closer to the date, we will promote ABA and other Ombuds Day events via social media and through the Ombuds Day website.

And remember, not all Ombuds Day events have to be held on Ombuds Day itself. Many organizations host events in the weeks leading up to Ombuds Day. This helps to spread out the activities and encourage attendance at multiple events. I look forward to this year’s Ombuds Day events, and this celebration of our work. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with questions, or if there is any way I can be of assistance.

Best Regards, Ryan Smith, Ed.D.
