Course Description 

This interactive course provides participants with a broader and deeper understanding of the full range of research and theory in human conflict, application of this fuller understanding of conflict in organizations, and practical applications for both working with specific disputes and helping to improve the organization’s systems and culture for addressing conflict.

General Goals of the Course

As a result of completing this course, participants should:

  1. Become familiar with seminal theories and research in conflict management in the fields of sociology, psychology, communication, organizational management, and dispute resolution.
  2. Gain insight into how concepts from all these fields can come together to inform the work of the ombudsperson
  3. Acquire specific new conceptual tools for facilitating dispute resolutions in the context of broader, sometimes counterproductive, conflict management systems and patterns in complex organizations.
  4. Generate ideas for how the ombuds might contribute to the development of optimal systems of organizational communication and conflict management, especially for achieving an optimal interface among the ombuds, human resources, legal, and executive offices.

Who Should Attend:

The course is designed for “new” ombuds (less than three years of full-time practice)Its objectives are to help new practitioners: 

  • Recognize the dimensions and parameters of the organizational ombuds role
  • Reflect on their own personal relationship to the role
  • Develop basic skills to perform the role effectively
  • Learn best practices
  • Identify resources to learn more
  • Build a community of practice

This course applies to ombuds programs in organizational settings. It does not address some features unique to other models of ombuds practice, such as classical, advocate, or legislative.

About the Instructors: 

Sue Theiss, MA

Sue helps employees and organizations navigate their way through sensitive and complex issues, choosing a path that works for each person's unique needs and circumstances, to resolve conflict and create positive change in working and learning relationships. She has provided individual, small group, and organizational conflict management services to a diverse group of employees and learners  for over 25 years. Having directed Ombuds programs at three major research universities, Sue has helped thousands of visitors navigate solutions to conflict in complex systems through individual coaching, mediation, training, and group facilitation.

While at the University of Arkansas, Sue developed and co-taught a university course on conflict and anger management and offered a 32-hour mediation course.  At Oregon State University, she continues to provide trainings for students and employees on conflict management and workplace bullying. As a member of IOA, Sue has presented at conferences and regional trainings on workplace bullying and conflict climate. She co-developed and presented the first Core course for IOA on "Theory and Applications for the Organizational Ombudsperson", attended by private and public institutions’ organizational ombuds from around the globe. Sue holds degrees in Business Administration and Communication.

LaCrisia “Cris” Gilbert 

Professional mediator distills over thirty years of experience and wisdom based on lessons learned from scores of organizations and businesses specializing in relationship building and conflict resolution management. The result is a very personal application of training methods and counseling that is at once inspiring, clear-headed, and filled with important implications for the future.

Professional Trainer for corporate and institutional organizations in conflict resolution and management, communication, skill building and character guidance in peer mediation programs.

Educator currently teaching Ombuds Course for Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law, previous Adjunct Lecturer in Alternative Dispute Resolution, Mediation, Family Mediation, and Practicum in Dispute Resolution at the University of North Texas Dallas. Experienced in teaching in the undergraduate and graduate levels, with the Dallas County Community College District, and Southern Methodist University at Plano Dispute Resolution Programs. Exploring the factors that trigger student motivation and creates learning environments that stimulate adult learners.
