Course Description
This course will focus on teaching ombuds to use coaching methodologies to improve visitors’ emotional intelligence. The course will begin with an overview of coaching methodologies and discussing the relationship between coaching and ombuds practice. It will then move into an overview of Dan Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence, including self-awareness, self control, awareness of others, and relationship management.
The instructor will model coaching methods and emotional intelligence practices throughout the course. Behavioral change and interpersonal skills can not be learned by reading, or even being told, rather by modeling and practice. This will be a highly interactive course in which participants engage in objective assessments, self-reflection, group discussion, observation, and role plays.
Participants will be guided through their own coaching process to enhance their emotional intelligence. Ultimately, participants will apply their understanding of coaching to the goal of coaching their own visitors for improved emotional intelligence.
- Participants will learn the foundations of emotional intelligence, including learning to identify four aspects of emotional intelligence
- Participants will practice the skills of emotional intelligence
- Participants will learn the basics of coaching methodology
Participants will learn how to use coaching methods to improve visitors’ emotional intelligence.
Participants should have a clear understanding of the impartial, independent, informal, and confidential role of the organizational ombuds, and should have completed some foundational ombuds coursework such as IOA Foundations of Organizational Ombuds, Ombuds 101, graduate level ombuds courses, etc.
