Empowering Change: Navigating the Challenges and Support for Bystanders in Your Organization and the IOA
Presented by: Angela Dash, PhD, PCC
This webinar equips organizational ombuds with essential knowledge and tools to support bystanders effectively, delving into the complexities of their experiences. Participants will gain insights into the barriers to action and the psychological trauma that can result from witnessing harm, fostering a more supportive environment for bystanders both within their organizations and the International Ombuds Association (IOA).
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and Understand Barriers to Intervention: Participants will learn to recognize the psychological, social, and organizational factors that prevent bystanders from taking action, including fear of retaliation, social isolation, and uncertainty about how to intervene in conflict situations.
- Mitigate the Trauma Impact and Enhance Support for Witnesses of Harm: Equip participants with the strategies necessary to understand and alleviate the emotional and psychological toll on individuals who witness harm. This objective will also cover the development of trauma-informed support mechanisms within their organizations, fostering safe, confidential, and inclusive environments for bystanders.
- Implement Empowerment and Engagement Strategies: Teach participants how to enhance the role of ombuds in facilitating direct intervention and providing support. This objective includes critically examining the language used to discuss bystanders, aiming to empower rather than stigmatize, and encouraging proactive bystander involvement.
