Using Data in Daily Ombuds Work

Ombuds are an organization's agents who work behind the scenes to help improve workplace cultures and build and sustain relationships while shining a light on deep-rooted issues through narratives and data. Data helps to build authentic stories that could lead to transforming organizations. In this session, Mr. Wayne Blair, Dr. Lisa Yamagata-Lunch, Dr. David Schwartz, and Dr. Bina Patel provide insights into the importance of collecting and utilizing data in our daily Ombuds work. *

Meet Your Presenters:

Dr. Lisa Yamagata-Lynch (University of Tennessee), Dr. David Schwartz (University of Nevada Las Vegas), and Dr. Bina Patel (Department of Defense)

Lisa Yamagata-Lynch is the University Ombudsperson and Director for the Office of Ombuds Services at the University of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville and serves faculty, staff, and graduate students. She is a Certified Organizational Ombudsman Practitioner(CO-OP). She is also a certified trainer in Crucial Conversations and Crucial Accountability, and a Gallup Clifton Strengths Coach. Additionally, she is a Tennessee Rule 31 General Civil and Family Mediator.

David G. Schwartz, Ombuds, professor, and gaming historian at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, studies conflict resolution, gambling and games, and history.  He is a Certified Organizational Ombud Practitioner and credentialed mediator. An Atlantic City, New Jersey native and former casino employee, Schwartz has written and edited  several books, including At the Sands, Cutting the Wire, Roll the Bones, Grandissimo, and Boardwalk Playground. He earned his Ph.D. in United States History from UCLA, and teaches several classes, including casino history, video games, conspiracy theories, alternate history, and jazz history.He is also an enthusiastic speaker and workshop leader.

Bina Patel, PhD is the principal of Transformational Paradigms, dba Bina Consulting LLC. She is a conflict resolution practitioner and and organizational ombuds. Bina is an avid publisher, researcher, and speaker in all things conflict resolution. She earned her doctoral degree in conflict resolution and peacekeeping analysis from Nova Southeastern University in 2017, specializing in female terrorism. Bina earned her Master's in International Business in 2007 from Nova Southeastern University and Bachelor's of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Florida in 1999.
